Since the announcement that most boats going through central London have
to have VHF radio I have been trying to get to the bottom of the
situation. As far as I can make out if you only have a portable radio
the boat doesn't need a licence. There must however be a licensed
operator on board who is allocated a call sign. To get a licence you
need to pass an examination. These are run by the RYA who charge around
£20 per candidate. But most people who host the examinations insist you
also complete their one day course which costs from about £60. I am
still trying to find a course within an hours drive. What I haven't
found out is if there is an annual fee and if so what it is.
If any one can clarify the annual costs I would be most grateful.
