The majority of canal locks are self (and hand) operated. There are
some exceptions, but often you still help out with the locks. On some
bigger waterways like the River Trent, Thames, Severn etc, locks are
mechanised and operated by lock keepers. Some can be operated by
boaters out of hours.

Some comercial waterways (Aire and Calder for example) normally leave
lock operations to the boater, but will man the locks for a passing
barge - normally a small team travelling from lock to lock.

Most tidal locks (Keadby, Torksey, Limehouse, Brentford) have lock
keepers that normally keep tide times, i.e. 2 hours either side of
high water for Brentford for example. These days however many are
being limited to operation during the day unless you book your out of
hour passage.

For an example of a good range of UK navigations my webpages have many
images, and some videos. Check out:

and for views of the Thames (as well as many inland canals):

I've enjoyed your information on American canals, there are some
interesting waterways, and I have done the virtual tourist thing of
using Google Earth to fly along the Intercoastal waterway from Cape
Corel, across Florida, upto NY, and then on to the lakes along the
Erie via the Cayuga and Seneca Lakes.

Cheers,

Mike
