It's true that you're unlikely to damage a gate by pushing gently. But I'm 
surprised that you can push a gate open against a head as great as 6 to 8 
inches. A back-of-fag-packet (except that I don't smoke) calculation suggests 
that on a typical narrow lock this would take between a ton and a ton and a 
third of force. 

A quick look on Google suggests that a typical commercial tug manages about 1 
ton push (or pull) for every 80hp of engine power. And that's a modern craft 
specifically designed for that purpose.

Are my sums wrong (quite possible - it's a long time since I did A-level maths 
amd physics!) or is your boat capable of a surpisingly hard push? (maybe 
because of being steam-powered?)
