I have been meaning to ask advice from you all for some time and Sue's post
about carbon monoxide alarms has prompted me to post.
We have a carbon monoxide alarm in the centre of the boat and the four
service battery bank is under the seat in the boatmans cabin. I purchased it
after the stove flue got blocked but that is another story! Any way several
weeks ago it went off when we were not on the boat but the batteries were
connected to a smart charger. Fortunately I live only ten minutes from the
mooring. When I went down to investigate I could find no problems (stove not
on) and removed the batteries thinking a faulty alarm. The following weekend
I put the batteries back in and after leaving the boat at the end of the
weekend within a few hours the alarm was going. Went back to investigate and
again no obvious problems. However when I checked the distilled water level
in the batteries all the plates were exposed. I had been meaning to check
the batteries for some time and I do not have an excuse for this lapse apart
from the fact that my daughter had an accident in Spain in May so the boat
routines have been neglected. I assumed that the batteries were creating gas
that was being detected by the alarm but presumably it would not be carbon
monoxide. Topped up the batteries and everything seemed fine and no apparent
long term damage to batteries evident. No more alarm problems. Last week I
returned from a very pleasant two week cruise up the Ashby (not everyones
cup of tea but a great canal you can enjoy at a very relaxed pace if you
want to and we needed a trip to chill out and averaged less than two hours
cruising a day) and a few hours after reconnecting the charger to the mains
on the mooring the alarm was going again. Removed the batteries and have had
no obvious problems with the service batteries and levels seem correct. The
charger has now gone into float mode and I will reconnect the alarm soon. I
was wondering if the big charge required when we returned to mooring after
the holiday caused the batteries to gas again. All the readings on the
battery meter are fine and we have an adverc system. Any comments and
suggestions. Sorry for longish post but at least I managed to resist
elaborating on my trip up the Ashby!

I asked for advice on a matter a couple of years ago and my computer blew up
after I received some helpful comments but was unable to thank you all and
by the time I obtained a new computer and connected it the time had passed.
So if anyone remembers thank you and sorry for the belated response! I feel
much better having got rid of that guilt.
