I cannot remember if the trolleybus could use gravity to get back on route or
if it needed towing!

One of the most exciting things to happen when travelling on a trolley bus
was for the pick-up arm to come off of the overhead wire either accidentally or
so one trolley bus could overtake another. The spring loaded arm would point
heavenwards & the poor conductor, amongst a chorus of jeering from eager
schoolboys, would have to unship a long pole, that was the length of the bus &
made a barge pole look like a toothpick, from a tube slung under the bus
bodywork. The end with the hook had to capture the pick-up arm @ the business
end &, by careful manipulation, pull the arm down & engage the groove back on
the wire. If you were lucky it slipped off again to rousing cheers & the
pick-up arm shot skywards once again threatening to rip the whole assembly off
of the roof!
