I am a little confused with your splines and boxes :-) I think of splines as 
being on the end of driveshafts or sliding gears etc and box spanners as
being hexagonal..
Are the spindles plain/tapered square section or are they really splined,
or would a large enough socket do either/both  jobs?

Sorry if I sound thick. I am not from an automotive background.
