My conclusion is that from time to time the off-topic stuff gets out of hand 
and if enough people voice their irritation at it then we regulars need to 
get a bit more self-disciplined about not upsetting too many other people. 
One way of getting more self-disciplined about it can be to find an 
alternative forium where it won't irritate people.  I don't suggest we're at 
that point now.  We were at one stage on the past, which was one (not the 
only one) of the contributory factors to the setting-up of Nonet.
