The Last Number Ones + Audio CD Details

The 'Number Ones' were the proud elite of boat people who owned and operated
their own cargo-carrying canal narrowboats. The term probaably originated
from boat gauging registers where there was a column for 'fleet number'. If
you ownedjsut one boat, there was only one in your fleet, and obviously
entry for this column was '1', the number one.
Joe and Rose Skinner were the last Number Ones. This book brings together
their story along with their long-serving horseboat Friendship, as a
celebration of their unique position in waterways history. The book combines
the transcripts of interviews with Rose and Joe, with a history of
Friendship and its preservation at the National Waterways Museum in
Ellesmere Port.

This book is accompanied by a CD-Rom of Brian Vaughton's interviews for a
BBC radio documentary recorded in 1961. 96 pages. Softback
