I use Cool Edit Pro, which I bought several years ago. Unfortunately 
the software has now been bought by Adobe, and they now charge a 
FORTUNE for it. Pity, as I always got regular free upgrades from 
Syntrillium Software in the old days.

However there is a freebie called Audacity that you may like to try - 
it's available from http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
