The full press release on Pennine Waterways also makes mention of some
more rock high spots being removed and more wooden fendering added
making the overall passage safer besides, as already mentioned, a boat
under individual control is much more manageable than one in a convoy.
I must admit to some concern about the reports posted of persons
venturing into the tunnel unofficially - it was partly the H & S police
which caused the current system to be set up, as I recall, and this
includes alarms (which one report mentions triggering) if access is
attempted into the railway tunnels. It was probably only the time of
day that this journey was made that avoided BW closing down the tunnel
until it was established how the alarm was triggered and even possibly
all trains stopped until all was cleared up. I am overjoyed to hear the
news of the 'full' opening of the tunnel (and yes I have been through)
and would hate any 'joyriders' going through to prejudice this progress.
Mind you if joyriders are not wanted couldn't the gates have been made
more efective?
