I wonder if it would help if we stopped mooring our boats at all and just stopped them in mid channel and either used a floating gangplank or jumped to the bank. If we all did this, there would be absolutely no risk of any damage to the canal bank (natural or otherwise), and I bet it would stop other boaters speeding past :-)
