There are a basically two solutions depending on how important keeping 
your warranty is!:

The most reliable way to do get wifi is probably to buy one of the 
PCMCIA modems and a wireless router with a PCMCIA slot. There are 
several of these on the market. I went the USB route because my laptop 
has type 2 slots and there aren't any 3G cards that fit it as far as I 
can see. I wanted something I could take away from the boat and use in 
hotels etc.
