out of their way and don't impede their progress.
I still wait for the day when I see a person in a wheelchair (one of BWs
excuses for their spending on towpaths) encounters cyclists coming head on -
given the hard width is often barely enough for one chair and the edges of the
path are often uncut nettles.
---A few years back, the ''kissing gate'' designed to prevent motorcycle
nuisance on the towpath was removed from the site near the old B&Q in Wembley,
because, otherwise, ''wheelchairs could not access the nearby Sainsbury's via
the towpath!''
In the same way, Routemasters have disappeared from our London streets
because of ''disabled access problems''
It's certainly a thorny issue, one that I wouldn't like to have to decide on,
but I've *never* seen a wheelchair being used on a towpath, Sainsbury's
incidentally have made a nonsense of the Wembley removal because they have a
very narrow entrance to their store now to prevent trolleys being pushed along
the towpath.
I've discussed access onto buses with several disabled people that I've
steered on 'Spirit of '57' a boat specifically designed for wheelchair access,
& all of them said that they wouldn't care to travel on a bus anyway.
Let's hope this competition that Boris has announced will come up with a
winning design that satisfies everybody.
