With our length of boat we keep at the back going up and wind the gate paddle 
first on T&M locks - that way we get chucked around a lot less. (We always tell 
anyone watching not to do it our way though!) The T&M paddle sets we don't like 
are the ones without the gate paddle as they are often real Brindley throwers 
(as in to the front) when the paddles are wound - even slowly.
 
 What we would like is those gate paddles restored with the old slung under 
beam winding rod - the last one left Hoo Mill lock many years back to be 
replaced by bog standard gear.
