We had one at Wolverley (near Kidderminster).

This bloke should be on the stage - he was brilliant. He had this amazing
story of his father in law taking the kids (grandchildren) to a football final
in Cardiff (which was on that weekend) and staying with friends overnight in
the town. Then, out of the blue, the  cops had contacted the kids father (the
story teller) to say that his father was in hospital in Cardiff after having a
heart attack. He had asked for details but the the police had non and, when he
said he had no money for petrol they drove off. He had phoned the hospital and
been told they had father but not kids and that he should get to the hospital
as soon as possible. Trying to find the kids he could get no answer from the
address where they were meant to be staying.

So now his one aim was to get to Cardiff and sort things but his car needed
petrol. So, panicing, he was on the towpath looking for his brother (who
normally fished this section) to get money off him - had we seen any fishermen
(no).

From asking about the brother (a last resort as he had done 10 miles along the
cut looking for him), through then telling the tale an hour had passed and by
now he was in tears asking if we had petrol in the boat we could lend him (no
we use diesel). Finally he offered his watch for money to buy petrol. Do you
know, without taking the watch we gave him some dosh - the sheer invention and
acting were worth a few quid and he was so grateful!!

Of course he never did send the money back as promised and we felt B fools and
yet I still reckon he was Oscar material or maybe he should write plays for TV.

She was trying it on with my Dad, but I've heard it all before, and
got up and told her so. So just remember if you get a similar sob
story here or elsewhere.

I had the same story in Bath---obviously the water must bring them out of the
woodwork!!!!
