Years ago I had a bloke at church (in Warrington) who was "stranded"
and wanted the train fare to get to Coventry. Never give money, but
offer to buy the ticket. So we went to Bank Quay, I got him a Saver
Return to Coventry (£15 in those days from the Vicar's
discretionary/ slush fund) and left him to get the train. But I
waited, the train went, and he came down the steps from the platform,
no doubt to try and get a refund, but found me in the subway.

He told another little story about "nerves" but insisted he did want
to go to Coventry. The next train wasn't too far behind so I made sure
he caught it. So he certainly got as far as Crewe whether he wanted
to or not.

And I'd kept the return half of the ticket...
