I gather it was a bit like that on the Grand Canal last weekend. GB
readers may be interested to know that very heavy rainfall and run-off
into the canal meant that there was a danger of the banks being
breached. Waterways Ireland had all four racks (paddles) open on all
gates all the way from the Long Level to the Shannon, a distance of
about 45 miles, to drain off the water. There was a current of 2--3
knots and boats were unable to make progress. Lockkeepers and
Waterways Ireland management were on duty from Saturday through to
Monday, including the nights, and they successfully avoided a breach.
