GB readers may be interested to know that very heavy rainfall and run-off into the canal meant that there was a danger of the banks being breached. Waterways Ireland had all four racks (paddles) open on all gates all the way from the Long Level to the Shannon, a distance of about 45 miles, to drain off the water. There was a current of 2--3 knots and boats were unable to make progress. Lockkeepers and Waterways Ireland management were on duty from Saturday through to Monday, including the nights, and they successfully avoided a breach. bjg
