Would Adrian "BW basher" agree? ;-)

When Erne-Nest was gauged by the HNC lads they were horrified to find that
it was exactly 6ft 10ins on all the (many) points they gauged.
That brings me onto another point with modern narrowboats, I am sure many
people have no idea exactly how long their new boat is, many builders giving
them some "extra" length, because they could not be bothered to cut the odd
few inches off the plates.
When Erne-Nest was just a hull, I measured it very accurately by measuring
between two plates that Lee the fabricator stood up against the bow and
stern. I was horrified to find is was quarter of an inch longer than
specified. Lee smiled and said sorry he forgot to allow for the thickness of
the rubbing strake round the stern! :-)
