Not having a computer at home, I come to a library screen on a Monday morning
to be faced with [today ]64 e-mails to read. I always fall into the trap of
reacting to a non-reactive URL & dash off a reply as soon as I read the
relevant posting. Baz Juniper had already realised his mistake & had sent an
amendment, a couple of e-mails down the line----too late---I'd already sent my
complaint to the list.
Please bear with me folks.
Incidentally, for those who have their own computers, this is
what it's like for those who don't.
For about three months now, I've found it impossible to open * any *
attachments whatsoever in yahoo, despite always being able to in the past.
Nothing has changed in the set-up according to the IT section @ Hillingdon
Central Library. Yahoo also deny anything is different. An assistant @ one of
the libraries I attend suggested that I send myself unopenable e-mails to a
non-yahoo site to see if they will open & I created a hotmail account that did
just that. Recently though, even hotmail is playing up--there is no rhyme or
reason for this sea-change. A mate sent me something this morning that will not
open, even just attempting to send it to myself @ Hotmail causes the computer
to freeze & it's necessary to close down & log on again to progress any further.
People ask me why I don't get my own computer, well, I would have flung it
through the window long ago if it were mine. At least by using a public one I
can moan constantly.
Incidentally, if I use a computer that is not in Hillingdon, things tend to
be a little better but certainly doesn't solve all the problems I get in my
local library.
Unfortunately, my local branch is about ten minutes walk from home, it's the
oldest set of computers ever [still CRT!] &, in view of the fact that
Sainsbury's opposite the library are extending their building to incorporate
amongst other things, a new library [in 14 months time, ye gods] the hardware
will not be updated until the new building is up & running. By that time I will
have gone completely mad [who said he already is??]
The biggest bug bear I have is if someone sends me a 'funny'
that I want to send on to someone else, unless I send the *whole* thing with
the history of everyone who has received it before me, then any pictures
involved will be reduced to an outline with a small red cross in the top
left-hand corner.
Being of a tidy mind & habits I like to delete these references but the
system won't let me. I've lost count of the number of so-called experts who
have stood behind me whilst I demonstrate the shortcomings of the system to
them. They then confidentally take over the mouse & are shocked to find that
this fault happens to them--usually with a comment along the lines of ''Oh,
that shouldn't happen!''
