But it isn't. 'But' is very common as a first word. 'And', in my view, is not to be overdone or used in more formal contexts, but it's not wrong. The Captain will have to be much more rebellious if he wants to be naughty. And I seem to be setting myself up as an arbiter of good writing. This is not a role I normally play, and often find irritating in others - unless it's George Orwell or Keith Waterhouse. So I'll shut up now. -- Nigel Stanley
