I disagree Steve, having knowledge of an area that has been known to have problems in the past allows you to use your judgement when you arrive there to use a balance of past risk v present assessment to decide whether you want to chance it or not. It would not be very nice to suffer a nasty incident only to be told later "Oh, I could have warned you about that place but I didn't because I didn't want to stigmatise the place" Knowledge is power and allows considered personal choices in all things.
