Towergate requires a professional out-of-water hull and stern gear
survey every five years or so for my 1927 barge. I don't consider
that a bad thing. I and/or the surveyor always find some underwater
work that needs doing (fixing some thin plating, welding some dodgy
rivets, new stern bushing, whatever). And I feel considerably
relieved and more confident with the aged hull's fresh bill of health
in my hand.

The docking and the survey cost me about £1k last year (the required
work was in addition to that). Money well spent.
