That's not an unreasonable fear. You don't say so explicitly, but I assume this is because there are considerable "back-breaking" compatibility changes in the rewrite. I would suggest the answer then is to rename it and release as a new project. This allows the old project to live on harmoniously, and give the new project a fresh start.
