I use ESS all then time. You need to load the ess package, for example by
having the following in your .emacs

(require 'ess-site)

At that point the Emacs function called "R" is defined. Everything should
work if you are using the CRAN version of R, although you might want to make
sure that /usr/bin/R is in your path.
