You need to set up X11. The quartz device does not work that well with ESS
because you are not starting the Aqua interface. As Peter said, you need to
start X11 and you need to set your display variable. The last thing is
easiest done by putting the following into your .Rprofile:
if(Sys.getenv("DISPLAY") == "")
Sys.putenv("DISPLAY" = ":0.0")
