I don't remember the peaks exactly any more but think I took those of the 
tutorial.

I have a debian stable system here (with some upgrades), running X.org 6.8.2 
with the nvidia drivers (1.0.7667) for glx. (I'll try with MESA tomorrow).

I think 2GB of Mem+2GB swap should be enough. Running a whole hemisphere works 
like a charm.
