I've gotten several instances of uPortal 3 and CAS working well on Ubuntu 7.10 and 8.04. The only difference that I see is that all of the software dependencies such as tomcat(5.5.23), maven, and java(1.5_15) were installed(extracted) by me rather than the OS. The only OS based software in use by us for the portal is the built-in MySQL.
Crikey! I was hoping to minimise the number of things I had to build but the Tomcat version may explain the original logging problem. The debian archives say that the problem has been fixed in Tomcat 5.5.26 whereas the version in the Ubuntu repositories is 5.5.25 which is also reported as erroneous in one case. I note that the version on Centos, where I didn't have these deployment errors, is 5.5.23.
