Crikey! I was hoping to minimise the number of things I had to build but the Tomcat version may explain the original logging problem. The debian archives say that the problem has been fixed in Tomcat 5.5.26 whereas the version in the Ubuntu repositories is 5.5.25 which is also reported as erroneous in one case. I note that the version on Centos, where I didn't have these deployment errors, is 5.5.23.
Forgot to add the reference just in case anyone else is interested http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=460839 This seems to confirm that the Tomcat bug is present in 5.5.25 although it appears to have been around for a while.
