I would definitely go for adequate performance (master/detail without n+1
queries) before distributed cache or pluggable lock engine if I have any
vote.

Yes.  That is exactly what I'm looking for.  The Lock Engine should be
'plugable', meaning that the castor.properties file should contain the
name of the imlementing LockEngine.
