Mike and Henry and others,

What I decided to do and Why.

Why change to the bracket ?

  1. Dragging the big ass Merc around the race course in the down position was
way too slow and i was tired of seeing everyone else pass me. So I decided to
eliminate my one last excuse, other than being a poor racer.

 2. In the Saginaw Bay we have tons of Zebra mussells, so by getting the OB
out of the water when it is not in use eliminates a nesting spot for those
guys.

  3. Getting the OB into the hole and back out again in one hell of a wrestling
match, hopefully on the bracket goes easier.

  4. More storage.

Why glass in the hole ?

  1. The Merc. weighs 125 lbs and the bracket another 40 or so, so I wanted to
get the weight as centered and low as possible.

  2. I have a split back stay and if I went to the corners the back stay would
interfere, by staying in the middle I have more shoulder room to work on the
motor.

How, as briefly as possible, sorry no pics.

  1. I had the original plug, which made life easier, so first I took it home
and cut 2 sheets of marine ply to fill in the plug. I used 2 sheets 1/2" &
3/8", I think to get the proper depth. I covered them with a slurry of epoxy
and fillers from WEST, set them in one layer at a time and put some weights on
them to ensure good coverage.....This is the easiest part by far.

 2. To put the plug into the transom I CHEATED, and hired a friend who is
really good with glass, and has tons of experience and also the time, but
essentially what he did was.

  a) Place the plug into the transom and the cut out the liner on the inside so
we could get to the outer hull.
  b) built a plywood piece to go across the plug and onto the hull and
glassed that in on the interior, while at the same time tabbing in the plug on
the exterior...glass mat overlaying the plug and the transom.
 c) Once that cured we followed it up with more glass pieces saturated with
epoxy and smoothed over the plug/ply until we felt that we had "over done the
job"

 3) I also went to a local machine shop and had them build a stainless backing
plate that will obviously go on the interior.

What remains to be done in the Spring ?

  1. Paint the Transom.
  2. Drill the holes for the bracket....over sized, filled with epoxy and then
re drilled for the proper size bolts.
  3. Mount the bracket.
  4. Go racing and see if it makes a difference, or am I really that bad a
racer?

Lengthy explanation, or thumb nail sketch of what we have have done, if
Santa brings me a digital camera that is simple enough to operate I will try
to send photos at a later date.

Thanks Dave - I purchased a Garelick 71040 (25hp/118lbs.) on ebay for my
"new" '94 Evinude 9.9. I was thinking about putting it on the side - what made
you decide to glass in the hole? Are you doing the work yourself? There were
some discussions about enlarging the hole but I don't think I heard anyone
talk about closing it in. I'd be interested in hearing a little more about the
process.

Henry,

This fall I purchased the largest Garelick model for my Merc. 9,9 hp big foot
model, which weighs 125 lbs. I am currently in the process of glassing the
"plug" into the transom and re-enforcing it to support the bracket. I also
had a backing plate made from stainless at a local shop. With the Michigan
winter as it is I probably won't get the project done until mid April.

I am really impressed with the bracket, it feels strong enough and it was
really the only option through the WEST catalog. It also was the only way to
get the motor out of the water while racing and clear of the zebra mussels
while at the dock.

Not much real information here, but I hope it helps.
