I think you will be happier with 5/16 I'm pretty sure that is what I used.
Also consider that the mast head sheeves were setup for the wire and not for a 3/8 line. It is possible you will have to replace them. I replaced mine at one time. I don't remember all the details but I'm sure there is someone on the list that has replaced a wire/rope halyard recently and can tell us what is up there. I believe the sheave & winch are the original set up, the current halyard is currently made of about 30' of steel cable with a snap shackle on the cable end and about 50' of what looks like a 3/8 line attached to a an eye on the cable. As the eye on the cable is crimped with and the eye being somewhat large, the 3/8 line won't fit through the sheave. I am wondering if a 3/8 line would fit through the sheave? Do I need cable and line?
