Ahhh TF,

You are a wise one indeed.
The proof about champagne... is to let a bottle of even the Best bubbly go Flat.. Then try to drink the stuff that's left over.. YAK

Getting back OT..
The liquid used to "Sacrifice" .. Depends on the country and it's culture.
And you'd be Right On, Old friend, using a beverage of your Geography and/or Cultural choice.

There are plenty of examples of "christening" liquids. such as ..
Saki, Palm wine, Mead, Scotch, Whiskeys of all kinds, various beers, modern and ancient ..(see the Pharos), Viniferous wines and Foxy wines.. Just to name a few. Not to mention .. Urine, Blood of a virgin, Blood of captured enemies, Blood from various animals, especially Sheep ( Lambs mostly...it's the "virgin" thing ) . And of course that stuff from Madame Cliquoe and Moet...they were having trouble selling..

After all, it is a Celebration....
Just keep an eye on your Sheep !

A little OT, but I think Champagne is the most over-rated beverage on the planet. Give me a hearty, chthonic vintage from Umbria or Lake Placid any day of the week...

....or just a tumbler of Gosling's Black Seal for that matter.
