Freecycle, You mention a separate GPS; so, you have one? I have an old Garmin 38 handheld. Even it will show me Velocity Made Good — toward a waypoint. So... if you can enter the mark(s) to which you have to race as a waypoint, your GPS should give you VMG. I use mine all the time in that mode. Just a thought. Perhaps the precise location of a marker will be unknown and thus not useful for setting a waypoint; but, it seems worth a try. And, I agree that a polar chart would bve useful to give you an idea of what your potential should be at various points to the wind.
