Jim: Yes, I have a separate GPS, two actually. I have a Garmin 128 mounted under the companionway hatch, with the DSC marine radio, side by side, facing the cockpit, so I can see the GPS screen, and hear the radio. This also allows me to network the radio and GPS'; shouldI have to send a distress signal, the gps will give location in addition to all the DCS info. I also have an eMap handheld. It looks as though I'll have to keep a notebook with VMG readings, compass, apparent wind direction and speed until I find a groove. That's why I was hoping someone would have notes or a chart, so that I could use that info as a base line, rather than having to add instruments that the PO did not leave. He was nice enough to leave me a Loran, the Raymarine depth and speed gauges. I suppose I can probably find something that will network with the Raymarine Depth and Speed at semi-reasonable price.
