Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC)

12/15: 5,000 SNOW GEESE were seen from Savannah-Spring Lake Road.
Cortland County
------------
12/21: A Light morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK and a NORTHERN SHRIKE were spotted
near Spafford.
Onondaga County
------------
12/16: A NORTHERN SHRIKE was spotted on Verplank Road in the Town of Clay.
12/17: A SCREECH OWL has bee found in a cavity in a dead tree at Beaver
Lake Nature Center. It can be observed in the room overlooking the bird feeders
and was seen as recently as today. Early to mid afternoon seems to be the
optimum time.
12/19: The Syracuse Christmas Bird Count was held, seemingly in a deep
freeze, and results were average. Highlights include YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER,
WINTER WREN, TURKEY VULTURE and numerous GREAT HORNED OWLS.
12/21: A NORTHERN SHRIKE was found on West Sorrell Hill Road in the Town
of Van Buren south of Baldwinsville. A YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER and a very late
HERMIT THRUSH were found near the Carpenter’s Brook Fish Hatchery.
Madison County
------------
12/16: A NORTHERN SHRIKE was spotted nera Erieville.
12/19: A light morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was seen near Erieville.
Jefferson County
------------
12/20: 2 KING EIDERS were found along with WHITE-WINGED and BLACK SCOTERS
and other waterfowl at Montario Point State Park on Lake Ontario..
Oswego County
------------
12/20: The Oswego Christmas Bird Count was heldthis day. 58 species were
reported with NORTHERN SHRIKE, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, WHITE-WINGED SCOTER,
KESTREL, BARRED OWL, and PURPLE FINCH being the highlights. A LESSER
BLACK-BACKED GULL was found above the dam in Phoenix. At the end of Rainbow
Shores Road on Lake Ontario a large group on water fowl continues to be seen.
Found this day were 70 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, 3 BLACK SCOTERS, 1 SURF SCOTER,
and 5 KING EIDERS.
Estralimital
------------
12/20: The SUMMER TANAGER in Spencerport (Monroe County) is still coming
to a feeder on 516 Colby Street. It was not reported last week but evidently is
still present and was seen yesterday. The homeowners are glad to have birders
come and observe the bird. They ask that you park on the road and walk down to
the barn and look for it at the feeders in back of the house.
