Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC)
------------

7/9: A large influx of migrating shorebirds was noted at  Knox-Marsellus
and Puddler’s marshes from both east Road and Towpath Road. Initial reports
listed a very large number of LESSER YELLOWLEGS (approaching 1,000), KILLDEER,
SPOTTED SANDPIPER, SOLITARY SANDPIPER, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, SANDERLING, DUNLIN,
LEAST SANDPIPER, and SHORT-BILLED DOWICHER. Also noted were 7 species of
waterfowl, SANDHILL CRANE, and BLACK TERN. Later in the same day other
observers were able to add WIILSON’S PHALAROPE, BAIRD’S SANDPIPER, and STILT
SANDPIPER. An earlier ebird report also listed BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, RUDDY
TURNSTONE, and SEMI-PALMATED SANDPIPER. Most of the afore mentioned species
were found the next day. This brings the total to 15 species in the last two
days. Ken Rosenberg noted that the ideal habitat of the marshes is the main
reason for the large numbers at this time of year.
4 fledgling PROTHONOTARY WARBLERS were seen on Armitage Road beyond the
Canal Bridge.

Onondaga County
------------

7/02: An Onondaga Audubon Field Trip to Green Lakes State Park yielded 42
species of bird including ORCHARD ORIOLE and YELOW-BILLED CUCKOO.
7/06: An ACADIAN FLYCATCHER is still being heard in Whiskey Hollow.
7/07: RED CROSSBILLS were reported from Morgon Hill State Forest and
Muller Hill State Forest in the southern part of the county.

Oswego County
------------

7/08: Only 4 species of Shorebird, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, LEAST SANDPIPER,
SPOTTED SANDPIPER, and KILLDEER , were found at Sandy Pond. High water is
covering the habitat needed to lure migrating shorebirds as opposed to the
conditions at Montezuma as noted above.
