can't help myself today - this will qualify as a rant/advocacy post:
On Wed, 19 Apr 2006,
write papers
latex
or develop posters
latex
cv? latex.
grants? pdflatex->Acrobat (may need to pay)
presentations? pdflatex->Adobe reader.
movies? pdflatex->Adobe reader->link-out->Firefox.
boss wants that other format? latex2rtf
I have just started to horribly miss my dot matrix printer and and my
cassette player for saving my data from my ZX Spectrum, after reading
these.
Having wrote my thesis and first papers in Latex, I can only
recommend any Latex user to learn Word. It has all the functionality
of a word processor provided you use it as such and not as a type
writer. The fact that 90% of people think of it as a typewriter is of
no relevance.
As for OS, my choices are:
Linux for a common 3D workstation: its free, fast, cheap, easy to
install and everything runs on it, 3D is cheap and easy.
OSX for desktop/workstation: all of the above but not free, but it
also runs Word/Excel/PP and Pages, Keynote, iDVD , iMovie, iPhoto,
iTunes which are a few light years ahead of their competition.
For a bit of extra cash you get the perfect desktop tool and the
ultimate crystallography workstation. And Linux cant beat it as a
Desktop, whatever I hear about star office or whatever. If you just
need the crystallography functionality Linux can do it and its as
easy to install and maintain as anything.
As for Windows I can say only one thing: Would you ever buy a toaster
that to switch it off you need to press the 'Start' button ?
