Having unsuccesfully tried to install Ubuntu on two different computer
systems where it should just work, I'll speak up in defense of the new
Core 2 MacBook Pro. Note however that I did return the prior generation
after 10 days in March after experiencing CPU noise and excessive heat.
One of the unspoken rules about Apple is that you never buy the A
revision of any hardware product. Instead, give'em 9 months to work out
the bugs, and you'll be much happier with the result.

So far, this new MBP hasn't had any problems, and now have it
triple-booting MacOS, Linux, and Vista (MSDN final release), while also
running WinXP under Parallels in Mac OS X.

As a comment on x86 virtualization software, it seems quite good enough
for everything *except* OpenGL/3D graphics. Windows, Windows versions
of Office, Internet Explorer, Windows Media and all that you associate
with ordinary Windows works perfectly under Parallels Mac OS X desktop.
Booting a virtual WinXP is faster than a real XP, you also get the
long-term sleep/suspend performance of Apple laptops, and when you're in
full-screen mode, you really can't tell that you're not running a
Windows laptop. I believe the this all applies to virtualized Linux
also, although I haven't tried it myself yet.

Parallels vitualization is so good that I'm finding the triple boot only
necessary for OS-specific PyMOL testing, where access to native OpenGL
hardware is mandatory. I would expect CCP4i (but not mg) to work great
under Linux as a guest OS on top of Mac OS X too.

By the way, avoid Vista if you do 3D visualization! It does not yet
support native OpenGL on common hardware, and it is unclear whether that
will change before the January release.

Cheers,
Warren

Either a PC laptop or Apple would be fine. I just bought a new MacBook
and after the salesman assured me it was the latest and greatest, it was
obsolete 4 days later, has had serious battery problems, random
shutdowns, and so forth. Meanwhile the new version allegedly corrected
this. But this has put me in a pretty foul mood with respect to Apple
recently, so I am going to recommend any good cheap PC laptop and
install a good free Linux distribution that is pleasant to use and
maintain, like Ubuntu Linux.
