Hello -

I am running ccp4 (with shelx), coot, and pymol (as well as CNS and phenix CCI apps) on a MacBook Pro intel laptop, and it has been great. Bill Scott does a great job keeping ccp4 and coot up to date to install using fink, and I have had no problems (since the g77 problem was solved several months ago). The lack of ALT menus is not great, but the touchpad works well - and PowerMate support is very easy, too, for those who like dials. I like it because it does have the Office and Adobe products right there to use without dual booting (although Parallels can help you with this on a PC laptop if you wish), and the graphics card is great - it handles everything plus can drive a big external monitor no problem.

I would recommend getting 2GB of RAM if you plan to use other programs while crunching, though. The MacBook Pro is a little pricey, and it does get warm. The folks I know have had good luck with the hardware, but there is no doubt that Bill's experience with shut- downs and overheating is not unique.

Good luck,

Miles
