I don't disagree, as I think that software that *requires* tray icons to 
function is fundamentally broken.  I was just pointing out that the 
proposed solution wasn't terribly usable.

Personally I think stalonetray or trayer are suitable replacements.

Plus, CDE has a *lot* more work remaining to be done on the existing 
codebase before it's in good shape for the (not insignificant) amount of 
new code that some of the proposed "modernization" projects would add...
