No.

Alienate _no one_.  There is no reason to choose one or the other
to support.  BOTH can be supported.  That is the crux of the
confusion.  Each thought the other was proposing to either
support old or new hardware, but not both.  There is not any
reason whatsoever that Linux should not be able to support all
the new drives, and still support old hardware also.

The drivers to support old hardware exist already, no need to
toss them away at all.
