Since other drives last just fine, I think quality control is the issue. 
I still have Philips 2600 which works fine, but slowly. Joerg told me 
about the clean and lube cycle, and I performed maintenence once using 
some very high quality non-gumming silicone enhanced oil. Now it works 
fine, although I only burn 1-2 CD/month. I think short lifespan is more 
an issue than case design.

I have burners in three other machines in the same office suite, all 
faster, so I only use it when I'm backing up stuff on the SMB network, 
rather than move it to a faster machine.
