As a followup to the message I sent two days ago, I have installed cdrtools 1.11 from cdrtools-1.11a01.tar.gz, but it has no effect on this particular problem. Same behaviour when I try to write at speed=8.
I notice in the cdrecord man page a remark to the effect that if I get timeouts, but no fifo underruns, (which looks like what is happening) then I "have hardware problems". Can someone expand on that a little? Is it likely that my drive is defective, or that something else in my machine is malfunctioning, or is it that the machine is just not designed in a way that makes faster writing possible?
