Packet mode does not make sense with cdrecord. Cdrecord defaults to SAO
writing for DVD.

Sounds reasonable, but first check for the most likely problem:

Did you have a DVD-R in the writer while doing this test?
After my Business Card (given away at CeBIT) seems to have been delivered to
the wrong persons inside Panasonic, I am currently trying to get the right
contact....
