Well, the only essential change between 5.5 and 5.8 which relevant in
DVD+ and Linux context is support for 'growisofs -M
/dev/dvdburner=/dev/zero', which might be indispensable in DVD+R
multi-session case. I mean as long as 4GB i-node wrap-around
(http://fy.chalmers.se/~appro/linux/DVD+RW/#isofs4gb) is not an issue
for your DVD+R multi-session recordings, then 5.5 is as good as 5.8.

Plextor unit is reportedly rebadged NEC and NEC [and other derivatives]
