Do you Microsoft won't sell you a license? I thought they were still
selling SQL 6.5 licenses.
Looks like SQL 2000 "Standard Edition" will still sell for about $1200. Let
us know if you find clustering and failover in some $1200 dbms from another
vendor. With prices like those for Enterprise, you'd think Microsoft was
TRYING to push Oracle to their customers.
It'll be fun to see how long before we start seeing posts on the CF-Talk
list that go something like "We're running a SQL 2000 Enterprise cluster on
six quad-processor Compaq Proliant blah blah blah".
The real nastiness about so-called enterprise versions of software are the
ways vendors package the "lesser" versions of the software. Rather than
adding high-availability and scalability functionality to the godawful
expensive versions of their software, they leave out (or remove) basic
features from the less expensive versions. By doing so, it's easy to
gradually create a mindset that if you're "doing serious computing" then
only the enterprise version will do the job.
