It's like anything else. If you feel it's too much to pay for the benefits
it returns, don't buy it. Sounds like pretty simple economy of scale. For
a one man shop, this may be steep, but even for a small shop of just a
couple developers, it's pretty darn cheap. I'm not sure the listing is
worth a nickel, but like someone else mentioned, the availability of the
latest development software can be worth a LOT. As you say, everyone wants
a few bucks for their "stamp of approval".
While I'm sure Allaire wants to put their products into the hands of as many
developers as possible, they also have to guard against giving away some
rather expensive software. I'm sure the $500 fee goes a ways toward
assuring some degree of legitimacy of the partner.
