I also think it is dependent on the type of work you do. I am becoming
more focused on Intranet work within large organisations. IMHO Internet
work is very focused on revenue driven solutions, whereas
Intranet/Extranet are very process driven with longer lifecycles for
projects.
I've found Revenue driven applications mainly focused on some sort of
e-commerce model and you are usually working to a very very tight budget
nowadays for short amounts of time.
Intranet solutions are usually implemented by larger corporations with
deeper pockets that are attempting to develop applications to help their
business processes. Projects are big, complex, very challenging, and most
importantly, unique.
I personally think Intranet work possibly has more long-term stability in
it as well (within large organisations).
Of course there is one negative aspect. Intranet is on site only. No
telecommuting :(

Surely wages / availability of work are highly dependent on location - and
comments made by anyone, are only going to be relavant for a very small
subset of the community...
I very much doubt that any comments I made about the availability of work
in
West Yorkshire, UK would relevent to anyone in the US...

I've not had to drop rates to get work. I've, actually, had to do very
little work to get work. Word of mouth is a great and wondrous
thing. Although, after Christmas, hiring always slows down. I wish I had
more time.
