You've already assumed that people aren't doing this on their own time,
which is an assumption you don't have the information to support.
My boss likes that I am active in the community because that means that I
know the scoop. He likes that I spend time checking coldfusion list email,
whether it's to get technical information or just make friends with people
who may be able to help our company in the future. However, it's not like I
abuse this situation. I claim a maximum of 1/8 of my day for email, no
matter how many hours I actually spend on email. If I am spending more time
on email, I still work the number of hours claimed on my timesheet. I
usually work an eight hour day, including one hour of email. Any
non-billable activities beyond that are on my own time. I am a salaried
employee but a lunch break is not included in my 8 hour work day.
If I spend time checking slashdot or @stake or the Allaire website forum, I
include that in my hour of email because the hour is dedicated to making
friends in the computer industry and learning about issues that may
directly affect my work. There have been several times already that I have
discovered security holes on our servers because I was reading @stake's
daily news, and the general knowledge that I have obtained through
non-security sites has helped us with networking problems, hardware and
software problems, server recommendations, and impressing potential
clients. There have been many times that I have posed questions to cf-talk
that have garnered fast responses because people know me and want to help
me out.
When it comes to a crunch situation, the time I have spent here flirting,
throwing muffins, and talking about drugs actually benefits the company. I
work 7 billable hours a day (my company considers in-house work billable)
and my boss knows that the other hour of my time has helped us on many
occasions. If I just can't afford to spend time on email, I set my email
client to not check my personal mail account (this one), which allows me to
get all business mail and no distractions.
