I have a friend who did something like this recently. He's a really nice
guy but he clearly has experience that his coworkers don't share. That
apparently intimidates them. Some of his coworkers have told him that the
amount of knowledge that he has is scary. He is friends with almost
everyone at his last company but he doesn't have any friends where he works
now. His manager asked him recently how he liked the company and I think he
handled it pretty well. He said "I really don't feel like I'm fitting in
very well and I don't know what I can do to change that." His manager
quickly changed the subject, which was pretty much an acknowledgement of
the problem. So maybe it isn't fixable, but his manager is definitely aware
of the problem.
Since then, he has been in on every job interview for someone in his
department. Granted, he's probably the most qualified to judge someone's
technical abilities, but I think that's also to make him feel like they are
trying to hire some people more like him. At least it shows some effort on
the company's part to alleviate a problem that is only their problem if it
makes him leave.
So I wouldn't say "I hate it here" but I've definitely worked for some
companies that deserved that. I did manage to mention some extremely bad
problems to my manager at one job and when they didn't get fixed, the
entire rest of the staff gathered together and went over my manager's head.
The problem was eliminated and my manager behaved in a way that resulted in
her removal as well. Sometimes complaining works.
